In 19 32, scientists began a study of syphilis in tuskegee, alabama. 600 african american men were recruited for the study in return for free trips to a physician and hot food. Of those, 399 had latent syphilis but none were told of their diagnosis or what the study was for. About half way through the experiment, penecilin became the standard treatment for syphilis. It was almost totally effective against the disease, but the scientists did not offer it to their patients.
