The Relationship Between Strauss and Jane Austen

Jeffrey Toobin: I was a favorite of Strauss. We got to know this Strauss a little bit. He called everybody Mr. So-and-so, Mr. Cropsy, Mr. Jeff, he called me David. When he left New School, I was designated by my class to give him five volumes of Jane Austen in the old magnificent leather. And that was the class gift. Yes. But he thought Jane Jane Austen was closer to the truth of things.
