Diminutive as they may be, often overlooked and mistaken for some one else, mosses as a group are extraordinarily successful. If success is measured by widespread distribution, they occupy every continent from the tropics to antarctica. They have diversified to fill every niche generating more than 11 thousand uniquely adapted species. These are measures of extraordinary success for such a humble being.
