The rights discourse can actually impede progressive movements for genuine democracy and justice. This is of a piece with a kind of Marxist view of how ideology arises as a means of preserving the status quo. A lot of these high-minded principles are put forth to protect unequal power structures. But not for that not to be transparent in the principles. The reason they emerge is to protect the unequal power structures that are in place.
