Can You Change the Future?

A lot of these shows is like, can you change the future? Can you avert the apocalypse that somebody experienced in the future? And so I get a little confused watching these. Like are they trying for something that's impossible or what do they have to accomplish in order to achieve their goals? It gets me a little confused sometimes.
