The vaccine that we use against varicella in the US, like you mentioned, it was licensed in 1995. In a lot of populations, immunity actually is quite good up to 20 years. The biggest question that I hear from people is if you get the varicella vaccine instead of getting chickenpox as a kid, are you more susceptible to shingles later on in life because you only got the vaccine? That idea itself is a little bit off base and I'll talk about why.
