The Importance of Oxtreotide in the Acute Setting
Octreotide is very important in this situation and it's probably your number one priority. It can acutely decrease portal pressures and stop the bleeding by itself. The second thing to give them is a little unusual as an antibiotic, which we usually recommend third generation cephalosporins or higher. Proton pump inhibitors don't really have a role in varicial bleeding in particular.
