At first, it's pretty compelling. The story seems different than most young adult fiction. You can get through the first book and not be wholly dissatisfied. But what makes the books increasingly unreadable is three things. First, they're bloated, padded with endless interchangeable fight scenes. Second, the technology is all magic, with no attempt to explain it,. Third, the books jar the reader most of all, endlessly, painfully, by the treatment of women.
