Diderot borrows from Spinoza, Cassendi and that wonderful Italian Viviani or Vanini. Pierre Baille actually came from southern France but he was Protestant in a time when it was very difficult for Protestants to live in France so he sought refuge in the Netherlands. He compiled a huge dictionary now that doesn't sound so amazing but  he does it in a way that was really revolutionary because as a reader involved in this huge discussion spanning centuries there is no received wisdom but
