Boris Yeltsin, who'd always been his rival, had other ideas. He forced Gorbachev to sign a decree abolishing the Communist Party. The leaders of the Soviet republics got together and told Mikhail Gorbachev he was out for job. After something like that, which had revealed how fragile his hold on power was, he just couldn't simply resume as if nothing had happened.
