Knocking on the Trees
The sound of knocking might wake a spirit that happened to be resting at the time. The ancient greeks would touch an oak tree when they called down divine protection from zeus. There were some native american tribes who thought that oak trees were the dwelling place of the sky god. Also, in old english folklore, it was said people would sneak into the woods when they wanted to tell each other secrets. If you knocked on the trees as you spoke, that would cover your voice from anybody trying to eavesdrop on you. Some christians have linked the knocking to the crucifixion of jesus Christ.
