I don't think such a mapping is in principle impossible. And in fact, I would love to have one and hope we do get one as we understand more about these extremely complex systems. But funnily enough, in the case of sentience, I think it's the parrot metaphor is apt because they have verbal behavior. But the verbal behavior is not always reflective of an interstate. Just because when parrots say I'm in pain, that's kind of meaningless doesn't mean parrots aren't sentient. In fact, I suspect they are.
