Malta rodel is a researcher in environmental communication at the swedish university of agricultural sciences. He tells us that these alt meats have gone through distinct phases of popularity and innovation based on why people were eating them. For thousands of years, they've made meat replacements out of topu and out of wheat gluten, which is called satan. These plant base proteins weren't necessarily always used as a meat analogue, but they could be a replacement for people who didn't eat meat, which was sly for religious reasons.
