We have a really hard time bringing scepticism to bear on people who are saying what we want to hear. And this, i think, really hampers us when it comes to figuring out the truth or at least the truth as far as anyone can meaningfully discern. Instead of politically charged questions, whether it's around science or sexuality or whatever,  what i try to do is to spend a significant amount of time listening to genuine, accredited experts who have an ideological reason to disagree with me and see what they say about the data on a question.
