The hypothalamus is a cluster of neurons basically above the roof of your mouth. It controls things like motivation, aggression, rage, sex behavior and temperature. The ability to tamp down basic physiological responses is controlled by the forebrain,. So there's a friction between our rational mind and these impulses.
