The Origins of the Family

Coulange writes of how the hearthstone, the sort of center of familial worship, was this thing that was immovable and set into place. The patriarch could not sell his family's lands because to do so would be to effectively destroy the afterlife of his family's religion. When a woman was married, she was excommunicated from her family's religion, her birth family, and became part of the new one. But what this indicates was not individual liberty, right, but a sort of federated system of autocracies.
