Hornets are not particularly interested in feeding on the adult bees, but they just basically want to create a massive amount of panic and eventually overcome the defenses. In asia, you have also the asian honey bee, which is not apis melifera, but its called apis sorana. And it has developed an mechanism of defense that seems to be quite effective.
