The prince spent a year learning hard lessons and living by the work of his hands. He missed bathing, he missed perfumes and good food. This was miserable and there was no end in sight. One day, he started working at a stump. After he dug most of it out, he noticed something. That root had a golden ring attached to it, a handle. He gripped the handle and pulled, and it revealed a carved descending stairway. At the bottom, something glowed. And in the palace deep underground, he saw her. A woman.
