The Importance of Public Knowledge in Economics

The old traditional university back to medieval times was a vocational institution. The German universities were run by the individual individual states. They were stuck into four faculties: theology faculty trained clerics, law faculty trained lawyers and medical faculty trained physicians. And so it was most of the students going through this system were in fact training doing a vocational type of degree. But the Americans didn't see this because they were doing graduate work,. "They sort of invented this idea of the specialized university," he says.
