Cartesian metrics measure the similarity or distance between one vector and another in cartesian space. Similarity versus distance, it's very simple. They are the inverse of each other. Different problems or scenarios in machine learning call for one or the other. But you just need to know what you need so you can call the right function or mathematical equation.
