Importance of Physical Examination and Other Monitoring Techniques
This chapter explores the significance of physical examination in monitoring patients' condition, as well as discussing additional tools used in ICU management such as central venous oxygen saturation measurements and blood lactate levels.
Scott Weiss, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology at Thomas Jefferson University. He serves as the Chair of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Weiss’ research focuses on epidemiology of pediatric sepsis and mitochondrial dysfunction in sepsis-associated organ injury. He recently served as the Co-Vice Chair for the international Pediatric Surviving Sepsis Campaign and was first author on the 2020 pediatric sepsis guidelines.

- Describe the physiologic rationale, evidence, and limitations of using a combination of hydrocortisone, ascorbic acid, and thiamine (HAT) in the management of septic shock.
- Recognize when VA-ECMO might be indicated in pediatric septic shock.
