What's the Basis for the Opposition to Statehood?

The push for statehood was kind of animated by this idea that washington, in addition to its own residence, it would be like a symbolic state representing black, urban america. But as the citi's demographics have changed, it's less of a clear cut symbol of any one demographic or type of place. The insult factor has just sort of migrated a little bit. It's not quite the same insult as it was 30, forty years ago. What you'll hear is invariably coming from people who are comfortable in their environment and who don't see any need to change.
