The End of the World

The verse that says the sun and the moon will be darkened is not a reference to an eclipse. What kind of eclipse would darken both at the same time? Couldn't have that. It was just an expression, a way of saying end of the world as you know it. But all idioms are strange to those who aren't native to the language. Where do we ever get that from? We say stuff like that.
