A lot of what byan the white houses were saying was also for us allies. The goal from the very beginning was to try to keep the western alliance intact in their opposition to what russia was doing. So as much as the hand, diplomatic hand they have, is a tough one to play, they seem to have played it as best they could, at least so far.
