I was really interested in how women's roles were in this time. That's the point of historic literature. What were women doing, what were they saying? It was increasingly difficult to do that without a specific lens which focuses on core ideas like patriarchy,. And so it's very shallow. Whereas I see in history a much richer role for women. I see them as having more power in the social realm than is understood. They weren't these sort of placid non-entities. And I think they were suffering on the patriarchy.
