How to Measure the Mass of a Star in the Milky Way

Astronomers were watching the motion of a very nearby white dwarf called LAWD 37, LOD 37. It's only about 15 light years away from us. And astronomers could tell that it was going to be passing directly in front of a background star at a specific time. So they turned their telescopes on the white dwarf and watched as it passed in front of the background star. The new tools are coming online in just a couple of years; this will be commonplace.
