Turbulence isn't a huge problem for planes because pilots can fly above or below these currents of turbulent air. But understanding turbulence is critically important for like lower flying machines, like helicopters or drones navigating a downtown city area with skyscrapers. Scientists are desperately trying to tease apart any patterns to be able to predict how these air currents will flow. The Navier-Stokes equations were developed over 150 years ago and there was a million dollar prize for solving them.
