In 1864, the Union could not take Richmond to end the war without suffering a level of casualties that would be not commiserate with victory. Once you put Robert E. Lee in Richmond, it was very hard to get him out. And then Sherman came up with an alternative strategy in the rest of history. When you make a mistake, you have to make sure that your successes are more than your failures.
