The Role of the Fool
The role of the fool is a great mediaeval tradition, and sadly, it went away as democracy and self government rose. A king or a queen wouldn't try to rule a kingdom if you didn't have a fool who could point out things that everyone else was complacently taking for granted. The theory was very much that a fool would discharge bad luck. So the fool was really crucial toto the healthy operation of a society because they an ask questions that others can't.
