Evagrius was born in what is now modern Turkey. His father was a bishop of the church and he also joined the church. He became an assistant to the archbishop there who relied on him greatly. One night he had this dream, very vivid dream where he takes an oath that he will go away to Jerusalem for the rest of his life. So that very day he left everything and he set sail for Jerusalem. Lots of pilgrims used to go to Jerusalem those days.
"Do not pray for the fulfillment of your wishes, for they may not accord with the will of God. But pray as you have been taught, saying: Thy will be done in me (cf. Luke 22:42). Always entreat Him in this way - that His will be done. For He desires what is good and profitable for you, whereas you do not always ask for this." - Evagrius Ponticus.
