Maritocracy and the Idea of Merit

Caundry: There are two ways of understanding merit and maritocracy. One is the common sense idea that of social roles and positions should be filled on the basis of whose well qualified to perform the role. The other involves a claim that goes beyond the idea of matching social roles with people who are wellqualified to perform them. And this is really the interesting the mension of mareatocracy, the one that's connected with an account of moral deservingness.
