Mao Zedong was trying to transform China from this old archaic, feudal state into a communist paradise. So in 1958, Chairman Mao would launch this radical campaign to out produce Great Britain while simultaneously achieving communism before the Soviet Union had been capable of doing this. The disaster, even though it was preventable, was only made worse by compounding things that would occur over and over and over again.
