The Mystery of the Mary Celeste
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a fictional short story about the Mary Celeste in 1873. He theorizes that one of the sailors goes on a murderous rampage and hijacks the ship, but there's one crew member who is spared because he has a magic amulet. The idea of a sea monster attacking the ship could have happened depending on your definition of a seamonster.
