Sex is largely determined by a gen linked to the z chromozone called d m r t one. But some birds are more symmetrical than others, and have different sex characteristics. It turns out that bird cells are sexually autonymous so not all of those cells necessarily have the same property. And when we make our own human laws to try to enforce what we think is natural, we tend to end up doing grievous harm.
