Is There a Connection Between the Internet and Empathy?

The internet and social media, i don't think of them as inherently anti social. In a way, you can think of the internet as humanity's greatest empathic opportunity ever. We have the chance to connect with people around the world at any time on their own terms, and respond with compassion. It is almost as though we're leaving behind some of the cues that allow us to detect each other's real humanity.
