
House adjourns after chaotic day without electing a speaker as McCarthy fails to lock down votes

Introduction
For the last 100 years, it's taken no more than a single ballot on the first day in session to elect one. Republicans moved to adjourn until noon tomorrow and this could all begin again. In 1923, it took nine ballots to choose a speaker. The record is 133 over two months in 1856. It was also a repudiation of Kevin McCarthy's powers of persuasion.
