The Committee of Public Safety

In response to the defeat at nirvenden and reports about general du morier's suspicious behavior, the convention created two more pillars of the coming terror. First, on march 20, first, they ordered that committees of surveillance be established in every municipality so as to make it easy for counter revolutionary activity to be identified and denounced. Then came the biggy. The committee of public safety was designed to correct for the weaknesses of the committee of general defense,. And as the dangers facing revolutionary france grew, so too did the power of the committee. It would wind up becoming some of the most notorious figures of the whole revolutionary period.
