C. Elegans: A Special Organism
C. elegans is the only animal for which we know a complete cell lineage meaning that from that first fertilized egg all the way to the adult in about three days. That adult is comprised of exactly 959 cells. It was recognized for the Nobel Prize back in 2002 because Brenner Horvitz and Sullston all received the Nobel Prize for their work in establishing the cell lineage. And more importantly it applied to understanding how different cells die off to a process of programmed cell death.
