Is There a Higher Risk of Death Due to Overdose in Prison?

When we compare people when they're incarcerated versus outside of prison, the risk of being murdered in prison is about 50 times lower. And so as a result of their less access to firearms in prison, the rate of gun violence and homicide is lower. The two weeks after release is a very high risk period where people are even more likely to die of an overdose than the people who are not incarcerated to begin with.
