The idea is that the states often will come in a predictable order, but they don't necessarily all occur. You know, so if someone has been a relationship for 10 years and then suddenly their partner breaks up with them, they're probably going to be shocked or confused. So that takes us to the second state, which is that your friend might be feeling bad, but not yet ready to feel better.

What's the best way to help someone who's going through a difficult situation? What are the four states of distress? What are "comfort languages"? How can we introduce more nuance into our everyday thinking habits? When gathering information and forming opinions, how do you know who to trust? What's the difference between intelligence and wisdom?
