The Prisoner's Dilemma
When do you know you're in a prisoner's dilemma and how can you assess the consequences? You can see the stakes here. If a group would benefit from individuals making choices that are not in each individual's best interest, it'd be better off if everyone else does it to. The problem was described and developed during the Cold War when it was used to figure out nuclear deterrence strategies. But solving such a problem in the real world requires more analysis of variables.
