Is the Lies Detector Really Reliable?

The lie detector gets pulled out in American court cases. What's our current thinking about their reliability? Do they work and can people sort of fool them? Some truth tellers, not surprisingly, if you start putting all these monitors on them and you got a big machine with lots of lights, they become a little bit nervous. So from my own perspective is that they are not especially reliable.
