The army and military service was absolutely central to the spread of the so called canal colonies in punjab. The files have been set in a narchiv in lahor how the people who served during the first wane war did they secure their pensions? Were they paid properly? Were they treated properly? After the war had finished, people were rewarded. Hundreds of thousands of acres of irrigated land was given out as reward. But this isn't so much about a passion for empire. Let's say this is about the hard graft that comes with signing up, getting that money and earning a living,. And then hopefully making it through the war so you can go back with some money.
