I think what i've learned through this experience is that there's such a degree of homeostasis in the human mind that your problems are your problems. That means that when something is bothering you, whether it's a life threatening thing or a very minor thing, it still kind of occupies the full band with so it doesn't annoy you when you hear people talking about more everyday problems.
