In one episode of the show ER from NBC, which aired on October 29th, 1998, one of the plot lines revolved around two medical students who very nearly overdosed on the drug ecstasy. Now this and other episodes of ER included explicit anti-drug plots and were redeemed by the network by NBC to the tune of $1.4 million worth of ad time that it could then sell to other companies. This is because ER was the most popular show and the country wasn't even close at the time. So it could garner way more money.
