The Duty of Punishment

In order to be an effective deterrent, other people have to be aware that the punishment is occurring. The retributivist view thinks it's great when wrong to suffer and we should try and make them as badly off as possible. I defend the view that says if we can punish the person and deter crime and at the same time make them better off, that's what we should aim to do.
