The deficit is the amount of money we fell short this year. That gets piled onto the debt which just sits out there like a lingering albatross around the nation's neck. A good way to think of it is the deficit is like using your credit card. Every time you use your credit card, you're borrowing. That's what the deficit is. And that totals the official debt about $21.6 trillion to date.
