The Importance of Performance in Design

I find performance is one of the most challenging issues and discussions to have with clients. I think it's very easy for our clients and even, even practitioners in our industry about really focusing on the web that's in front of them. We need to be designing for web that's more broadly accessible than at any point in its history but also less volatile when we're talking just design. So, how can we talk about building these rich responsive UIs that are still visually rewarding? Also providing wonderful content and services, but also hardened against hard connections like a connection that might drop out while they're downloading some rich images. Those are interesting challenges to me as an independent freelancer.
