Chagos - A Brief History

The Chagos Archipelago is a group of 58 islands located in the Indian Ocean between Mauritius, Madagascar, and the Maldives. It has been part of that colony since 1814 when France ceded it to the United Kingdom by the Treaty of Paris. In 1965, the British received a request from the U.S. to make available one of those Islands as a US military base. Between 1968 and 1973, Britain removed the entire population of the archipelago; about 2,000 people were expelled.
