Beta Lactams: How Long Do We Have?
The beta lactams are very unique in the way they kill bacteria, they're time-dependent killers. So it's about maintaining concentrations above the MIC of the organism for a defined period of time. Once you get one log or two logs of kill, that gets you to a bacterial burden of around 10 to the fourth. After that, our body's immune systems actually take over and do most of the bacterial killing.
